Frequently Asked Questions
What types of outdoor classroom canopies do you offer?
We currently build two main styles of canopy, all handmade in Cornwall and available for schools, forest schools, and groups across the UK:
Tree Outdoor Classroom Canopy - an open, pole-free design, ideal for storytelling, campfires, and group learning.
Gather Outdoor Classroom Canopy - a freestanding canopy structure with timber poles, ideal for outdoor classrooms and permanent learning spaces.
Roundhouse Canopy - a timber-framed outdoor classroom with a circular design and central vent, perfect for year-round use. COMING SOON!
Each canopy can be customised to your site and is built to last. All of our outdoor classroom canopies are designed for use in schools, nurseries, and forest school settings across the UK.
Are your canopies made in the UK?
Yes, all our outdoor canopies are handmade in Cornwall using sustainable, locally sourced materials wherever possible. Every canopy is carefully crafted to combine strength, weather resistance, and natural beauty, making them ideal for schools, nurseries, forest schools, and community groups across the UK.
Are the canopies weatherproof?
Our canopies are designed for year-round use in all weather conditions. We use treated timber and a choice of PVC or canvas covers, both durable, water-resistant, and fire-treated to British standards.
In the case of severe or named storms, we recommend temporarily lowering the canopy as a precaution. The Gather canopy is designed to make this straightforward. It can be unhooked from the outer poles and lowered towards the central pole, where it can be secured, similar to closing an umbrella.
Can your canopies be customised for my site?
Yes. Whether you need a canopy suspended between trees, supported by a central pole, or installed with a timber frame, we adapt every design to your location. We also offer canopies in canvas or 650gsm PVC which comes in a range of colours. We advertise the most popular size here but can make them larger or smaller to suit your site! We’ll work with you to design a canopy that suits your site and requirements.
Do you provide delivery and installation?
We offer delivery worldwide and full installation packages across the UK for freestanding canopies. Tree-mounted canopies are supplied with full guidance but are not installed by our team.
How long does installation take?
The timescale depends on the design and your location. Generally:
Fabrication: usually 3–4 weeks (up to 8 weeks at busy times)
Delivery & installation: 1–3 days on site
We’ll provide a clear timeline once we’ve assessed your site and agreed your design.
How long will a canopy last?
With proper care, our handmade timber canopies last many years. Treated wood resists rot and decay, and durable PVC or canvas covers are designed for long-term outdoor use. Many of our canopies have been in continuous use for over 10 years in forest school settings. We also provide seasonal care advice to help you extend the life of your canopy.
Do we need planning permission for an outdoor classroom canopy?
In most cases, outdoor classroom canopies do not require planning permission, particularly when used within school grounds. However, requirements can vary depending on your site, so we recommend checking with your local authority if you’re unsure.
What do we need to check before installation?
Before installation, we ask that you confirm there are no underground services such as utilities, pipes, or drainage systems in the proposed area. It’s also important to be aware of any large tree roots where groundworks may be required.
We’ll guide you through what to check once we’ve reviewed your site, but final responsibility for confirming underground conditions remains with the site owner.
What ground surface is suitable for installation?
Our canopies can be installed on a range of surfaces including grass, soil, and some hard standings. For freestanding canopies, we ensure the groundworks are suitable for a safe and secure installation. We’ll advise on this once we’ve seen your site.
Can the canopy be used all year round?
Yes, our canopies are suitable for year-round outdoor learning and activities. Many schools, nurseries, and forest schools use them as outdoor classrooms, fire circles, and gathering spaces.
Do you provide guidance after delivery?
Yes. We provide full guidance and support to help you set up and use your canopy safely. If you have any questions after delivery, we’re always available to help.
Do you work with schools and groups outside of Cornwall?
Yes. While all canopies are handmade in Cornwall, we deliver anywhere in the world and can deliver and install throughout the UK and Europe. Schools, nurseries, forest schools, and community groups from Cornwall to Scotland have chosen MyCanopy for their outdoor spaces.
